Harry Potter Marathon Weekend!

In times of stress we all seek comfort in different ways. For me - it's a Harry Potter marathon. I hate to admit this, but I've only read Deathly Hallows once... and I've been meaning to read all seven books back to back forever. So - for a variety of reasons, NOW is the perfect time to indulge. I'm almost done with THE SORCERER'S STONE and will be moving on to THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS over breakfast. Don't try to ring me - I'll be busy at Hogwarts.

Thoughts on HOPE...

Hello, it's Friday, February 10th and I am in the office today..... I feel like one of those voicemail messages you get sometimes...but it IS Friday (yay!) and I am in my writing office today. Friday is my day for catching up on email, Twitter, FB, blogging and most importantly - writing! oh. and laundry. Always with the laundry.....oy.

How are you today? :-)

Fridays are my random chit-chat blog post day - where I don't really have a plan, but just talk about whatever. So, here we go - I was thinking about HOPE the other day. Not Hope, the person, but HOPE - that magical motivator that makes you wake up and think "maybe this is the day". Like what makes the caged bird sing.

Everyone knows that feeling; There are a million different reasons why people feel hopeful, but I think those slogging their way through the world of publishing have a more intimate knowledge of HOPE and, perhaps, a greater - I don't know - tenacity? to remain hopeful for l-o-n-g periods of time in the face of silence, or rejection or more silence or more rejection.

But I wasn't just thinking about HOPE, the motivator, but also about the loss of HOPE and what it is, that at a particular moment, extinguishes the light of hope and causes that person to give up.

Are they emotions we can control through sheer will-power? Can we force ourselves to remain hopeful?

I don't know for sure, but in terms of publishing, I think it comes down to believing in yourself. Believing in the story you have to tell. There's always room for improvement, but if you believe in what you have to say and do everything you can to say it the best way you can - then there will always be a home for your work-somewhere. Maybe not the way you originally planned, but that's life, right? Which is why, ultimately, we remain hopeful.

I like waking up thinking "maybe this is the day" because I believe some day it will come true and it will be THE DAY! And maybe some days we have to make our own luck.

Here's to your dreams coming true, too! Never give up HOPE!

Happy Wednesday! This is one of those posts that I never thought I'd be writing. Well, to be honest, I never thought I'd have a blog, but since I do I get to tell you that THE FAERIE RING is now available as an AR test! I can remember when my daughter was in elementary school and middle school and looking for books to read that she would like and could also get AR points. Who would ever dream, that I would write a book that would be eligible??

The Next Step in World Domination...

Apparently, Amazon is in the process of rolling out a retail store in Seattle in the next few months. From what I've read, it sounds like it's going to be a smaller 'test' store with an emphasis on selling books from their new imprints as well as their Kindle e-readers and accessories.

As you probably know, Amazon's move into publishing, in addition to book distribution, has launched a firestorm of protest from other bricks and mortar bookstores and sellers who claim they won't sell Amazon's books.

It will be interesting to see how the true market drivers of supply and demand affect Amazon's success. Stay tuned. To read the whole article go here.

Happy Thursday!

I meant to post this yesterday but the day got away from me. After our snow / ice storm of a few weeks ago, we are looking at a week+ of sunny weather. I don't know what's up with the wacky weather - but I LIKE it! :-)

As I mentioned last week, I'll be posting (usually on Wednesdays...ahem...) about some upcoming and newly released books.

Another great book to check out that has recently released is the sequel to last year's dystopian thriller, XVI: TRUTH, by Julia Karr. If you want a good read, check this out:

Random Kindness + a mystery...

I'll be honest: I was having a blah day. I didn't feel like writing. I couldn't think of anything to blog about. I'm waiting on news that I've convinced myself isn't coming. Ugh. It was one of those days.

Then the UPS man came bearing surprise gifts. And my entire day changed. :-)

The lovely Jim Frenkel, who is a senior editor with Tor, sent me a galley of a fascinating new story that is coming out in July called THIEFTAKER. Jim and I met in November while attending the NCTE conference at a really fun dinner hosted by the awesome Kathleen Doherty, Tor's publisher. While at dinner we chatted briefly about upcoming books and this one sounded particularly intriguing. As Jim put it so succinctly: 'Set in Boston 1765 and has magic.' What more could I want?? :-) So, he very kindly sent me an early copy.

This and That...

Happy Wednesday! We are all still digging out from the storm last week. Fourteen inches of snow followed by an ice storm adds up to one mess. The power was out for many, some for up to 5 days. So many trees have broken or come down - it's sad. We had one tree that didn't make it:

One trunk is already down in this picture and the final two trunks broke a little later. Sad. We lost parts of other trees as well, and there are down trees all over town. But, on the other hand, check out this tree:

This birch actually bent even further, until the tips of its branches were touching the snow, but it survived and is almost upright again. Amazing!

Besides storms, January is a great time for new books and one of my friends, Caroline Starr Rose, has just released her book, May B. If you want a good read, check this out:

Alfred the Snowman and I love snow days...

Yes, I'm sipping hot cocoa in my snowman mug right now, having just come inside from building Alfred, the Snowman.

He's a happy looking guy, isn't he? :-) My daughter and I made him in the woods behind our house.

We were in this secret little hollow that only the forest animals know about.

Look how tall he is! I think he's about 5'5" as my daughter is a little over 5'3".

Snow!

We've got SNOW!! YAY!!

It's been snowing on and off for the last few days, accumulating up to about 4 inches in our back yard, but it was warmer yesterday and some melted. But they've been predicting that this big storm was coming in last night and YAY! for once they were right!!!! Look what I woke up to:

Of course, being one to recognize opportunity when I see it, last night I bet my daughter and husband on how much snow we would get. Loser has to cook dinner. Second place has to do the dishes. Winner sits on her butt on the couch.

I bet we'd get 10 inches, my husband said 9 inches, daughter said 8 inches. Ahem. I hope dinner is good because I'm going to be enjoying my couch time!! :-)

It's still snowing and supposed to snow ALL DAY! Woot! I LOVE snow - I take it as a sign that good things are going to happen!!

I heard a rumour...

Happy Friday, lovely poppets! I heard a delicious rumour yesterday that THE FAERIE RING is going into a 2nd printing!!! YAY! That makes me so happy! Thank you to everyone who has bought a copy and spread the love. It's all about sales in the publishing industry and every little bit helps. Especially for debuts. So if you loved the book and wanted to post a positive review somewhere so that others might find out about it - I would be very grateful! :-)

Also, in the good rumours department I heard that THE FAERIE RING is going to be published in the Kingdom of Thailand! How cool is that?

In other news, I saw that the fabulous SP Sipal is offering a month long class on A Writer's Guide to Harry Potter where she talks about some of JK Rowling's techniques in writing the Harry Potter books. I love her blog and especially love the way she analyzes the HP books - there are so many clever bits of information that JKR has hidden in the story - like using the word 'spot' in the places where there are red herrings in the story - amazing stuff. I can't wait!

Happy Friday, Everyone! I have Friday's off from my day job so it's my day for writing (and doing laundry and cleaning the house, but we'll ignore that for now....)

So what am I doing? I am currently working on a young adult fantasy novel (that's unrelated to THE FAERIE RING), and is partially set in Paris 1910. I've only been to Paris briefly for a day, a few years ago, but I'm hoping to go back and spend more time some day soon. Here's a shot I took of the City from the Eiffel Tower:

Anyway, in that serendipitous way the Universe has, as I am writing about Paris, it keeps appearing in other parts of my life. My daughter, who is a sophomore in high school, had to recite a poem for her English class. The poem she chose (not knowing what I was writing about) is called Somewhere to Paris, and talks about the duomos (cathedrals) and "the fantasy of lights and marble".

Then last night, on a whim, we decided to watch Midnight in Paris, which has some beautiful shots of the City and definitely makes you feel like you're there.

So now that I've been properly inspired I will get to work and head to Paris. :-)

Inspiration...where does it come from?

Inspiration is a funny thing. You never know when it's going to strike.

I'd talked about writing a book in the past. I'd even spent a few months writing a very bad murder mystery about 16 years ago only to shove it in a drawer when my daughter was born...then I read Harry Potter five years ago and it was like a light went on in my head and I had to write.

Last April I was at our Western Washington SCBWI conference listening to Holly Black give a fascinating talk about magic systems when the title for a book popped into my head. I'd been working on the concept off and on for more than a year, and just like that - it all came together. The weird thing was - it wasn't even related to the topic being discussed.

The title and the idea for THE LAST DANCE, a YA Contempory story that I recently finished, came to me in a dream. Yes, seriously.

Last night I was doing some research for the book I'm currently writing and found this fascinating post about who Lady Gaga might have got her inspiration from: Marchesa Luisa Casati, a celebrity-type icon from 20th century European society. What do you think?

I'll leave it up to you to decide if Gaga was inspired by Casati's fashion experiments but inspiration as a whole is a fascinating subject. I was watching the movie White Christmas over the holidays and suddenly wondered if Michael Jackson got his inspiration for the black loafers, white socks and short black pants look from Danny Kaye when he wears a similar outfit during the Choreography number. Of course that movie came out in 1954, many decades before Michael Jackson put that look together. Did Danny Kaye inspire Michael Jackson?

I recently read PERSONAL CHEMISTRY by Simone Elkeles for the first time and shortly afterward I was watching the TV series Veronica Mars and wondered if Weavil and Lily Kane's romance in that series had been the inspiration for her characters.

I guess we all have to be open to inspiration when it comes looking for us. Or maybe it's just that true inspiration compels us to do something with it.

I can't think of a better way to kick off a brand new year than to find oneself on the top of a mountain in beautiful bright sunshine, skiing in perfect snow!

If you've never been skiing you don't know what you're missing. Such breathtaking vistas!

And wonderful tranquil settings.

And so much FUN plummeting down the hill at high rates of speed! (Some faster than others...ahem....) We had a wonderful day and I'm sure it is a sign of wonderful things to come all throughout this new year.

Check out these amazing crop circles, from the files of the Temporary Temples website and blog! This image is so spectacular - you need to click on it so it gets bigger and you can see not only the incredible length and size of the design, but also the intricacy of the hieroglyphics.Wow!

Look at how perfect those circles are formed, with the crops bent different directions to create the texture. Seriously amazing. I dare anyone to create something this detailed and on this scale in a single night in the dark. Not. possible.

And this formation in East Kennett that has twenty different pyramids woven into the design. It's like an optical illusion, isn't it?

Did you ever wonder? The inspiration for faerie wings....

Do you ever wonder where the inspiration for characters in stories comes from? The most awesome Mundie Moms hosted a chat that I participated in last week (thank you KatieB and Sophie!) and one of the questions that came up was "What was the inspiration for the wings of the faeries featured in THE FAERIE RING?"

I wanted the faerie mythology in the story to be based on the well-known foundation of the Seelie and UnSeelie courts - but from there I wanted to create my own faerie lore. Below is a picture of the Glasswing Butterfly, which was the inspiration for my description of the faerie's wings. Aren't those beautiful?

These wings seemed especially fitting for the beautiful, but dangerous creatures of the Otherworld. What do you think?

THANK YOU to Barnes & Noble for hosting my hometown signing, which was also my launch party, on Wednesday night and THANK YOU to everyone who came out to support me. I'm SO grateful for your kindness and well-wishes. In the good news department, apparently we broke all the records for a new author signing here! YAY! :-) (and if you didn't get a copy of THE FAERIE RING, B&N has ordered more copies, which I will come in and sign - so they'll be available next week.)

I don't have a bunch of pictures but here are a few for your viewing pleasure:

These boys are like the sons I don't have: Colin, Keenan and Mitchell. My daughter has grown up with them since they were babies. All of them are GREAT athletes and wonderful young men. SO much fun to be around. (However, I can still beat them all in the card game Nerts. Just sayin'.) ;-)

(who I never got to say hello to but I heard you were there - thank you!) Debbie and Barb and Rachel (who I also missed!) Val and Brian, Kim and Cindy, Will and Sygna (I hope I spelled that right!!) 1,000 mitzvahs = 1,000 kindnesses: Could you do it?

When I was at the PNBA tradeshow this last weekend I had a chance to chat briefly with another author named Linda Cohen. I'd never met her before, hadn't actually heard about her book, but I love the concept so much I wanted to mention it here.

Linda's book is entitled 1,000 MITZVAHS: How small acts of kindness can heal, inspire, and change your life.

"When her father passed away in 2006, Linda Cohen resolved to embark upon a project: perform one thousands acts of kindness - mitzvahs - to honor her father's memory. More than a touching story of a daughter's love for her father, the story is a testament to the transformational power of kindness, and a call to arms for those who would like to follow in Cohen's footsteps with their own mitzvahs - no matter how large or small."

I'm looking forward to reading this one. I already feel inspired! I hope today that you give and receive a mitzvah!

A funny photo from the KT Literary retreat + giveaways!

So this was too funny not to post. :-) The lovely lady above (the one flirting with Mr. Pumpkin-head) is the talented and FUNNY Carrie Harris, author of BAD TASTE IN BOYS and my crit partner! We finally met last weekend at the awesome kt literary retreat in Colorado, organized by our fabulous agent, Kate Schafer Testerman!

We also had the chance to see some spectacular elk up close and personal - this guy was just grazing at the side of the road! He's about SIX FEET TALL!

It was an amazing time and so much fun to meet and hang with Kate and the other authors! :-)

Gone to...the KT Literary retreat

We're in Colorado at the first ever KT Literary retreat and having a fabulous time. We woke up to snow and drove through the mountains, finding a waterfall, elk and all sorts of beautiful views.

We also stopped by the Stanley hotel, which apparently is haunted, and is the place where Stephen King wrote The Shining. Amazing huh?

Yes! We all have the same AWESOME agent: Kate Schafer Testerman of kt literary, llc ! And YES! many of us are headed off this weekend for the First Agency Retreat!!!! How awesome is that???!!! The covers above are obviously not all of Kate's wonderful clients and I don't think everyone will be there, but there will be a BUNCH of us there and I can't wait!!! It's been a little more than two years since my lovely agent, Kate Schafer Testerman of kt literary, llc, sold my book, THE FAERIE RING to Susan Chang at Tor Teen. And today, finally, THE FAERIE RING is launched!

I'm a little drippy just writing this post. It has been such a WONDERFUL, FANTASTIC and SPECTACULAR journey getting to this day. I am so grateful to SO MANY people for your kindness and support in sharing this path to publication with me.

Please accept my heartfelt thanks and help me celebrate this day!
